I was recently thinking what my favourite sites on the Internet were. I choose a mix of time spent on each site, and absolute usefulness. Here they go:
1) Wikipedia : I'm totally amazed at the quality of this service, and I use it basically several times a day to check on a fact, a definition, background info. Thumbs UP. My main source for the world's History now.
2) Google Earth: I used to pay for Keyhole, the original service before Google acquired it. I still love it, and I find the layers on top of it, APIs, zooming facilities extraordinary. Hopefully it will expand into more features (better manipulation of the maps, higher quality everywhere).
3) Techmeme : this site created by Gabe Rivera has been my start page for the past 14 months now. I don't use any of the so-called "start pages" services, and only use this one. This has replaced all my news sites, as I've stopped reading blogs.
4) Google Search : the key to finding anything on the net. I've tried using other services from competing companies, it's my favourite.
5) twitter : the new comer. I've been a member of several networking services for years : LinkedIn, A smallworld, facebook, plaxo, Xing, etc. I've never found a real value in them. With this service I keep in touch with my close friends, contacts, and love this new chat system. I check it at least twice a day to catch up.
Runner ups :
* for music: last.fm, Pandora, Rhapsody
* email: I use Apple's Mail + Thunderbird (I check 3 times a day)
* IM : Skype is my favourite, although I don't use voice that much.
So to illustrate the new found interest of the net, here's a little quizz, I'll be updating with a new question as soon as you find the answer.
Can anyone tell me who this person is, and what would have made this person worthwhile mentioning :) ?
