Jacques Chirac, French President, starts videoblogging too :)
Aha! Jean-Michel Billaut was right, the President wished all French people the best for 2006 in video format on the web this year. Well done Edouard!
I WOULD have added a Flash version of the event heren, but although I’m allowed explicitly here to reproduce a “public” document,
“Les documents "publics" ou "officiels" ne sont couverts par aucun droit d'auteur (article L.122-5 du Code de Propriété intellectuelle) et peuvent donc être reproduits librement. C'est le cas notamment pour les discours et interventions du Président de la République et les communiqués.(*) “
I’m not allowed to reproduce or even transcode a multimedia document such as a video, nor even an official picture of the President…
“ Les graphismes, photographies et ressources multimédias ne peuvent être reproduits sans accord préalable. ”
It seems Nicolas Sarkozy was cooler on Loic’s podcast.
So… you can find the original video in Windows media (streaming) or Quicktime (progressive download) formats on the Elysee website.
Interestingly, the video format is iPod compatible at 320*240 (but there’s no RSS feed, so you can sync it here) with 25fps (one too many ?
), and is produced at a 150Kbps bitrate for video with 48kbps bitrate for stereo audio. The files are stored with one of the larger web streaming companies in France (Yacast), on a server called viphttp.yacast.net
. A little traceroute will show you that the server is connected directly on one of the 3 largest internet exchanges in FRance (parix owned by FT), with a Gigabit/s link… It pings really close indeed at ~30ms. Good for reaching everyone in the country, but I wonder about the number of visitors (10,000 ?).

There’s no site installed on the server, running Windows server 2003 + IIS. I just wonder why the file was named b215a ?
The transcript of the speech is available online (French).
