Cool review of Mandrake 10.1 (a nice linux edition)

MandrakesoftI've been waiting to install this new version of linux for a while. Then I ran into this review on OSnews.com (screenshots here). Pretty nice: I also have an old Armada m700 currently running Fedora Core2. I'll test Mandrake 10.1 on it, before testing out Fedora Core 3 as soon as it comes out.

Still waiting to be convinced ? This might be the right distro for you.
And make sure you check out this list of top 20 apps for Gnome as well!

Playlist: Axelle Red, live on France 3 TV. Good stuff.

Update: it seems this version has lots of improvements for mobility (read: features for laptop users).

Making trackback work on Typepad

QuestionmarkIn the past few months, I have been receiving a number of Trackback notification emails in my inbox.

Well, I have been wondering about this for a while: what exactly is Trackback, and how does it work ?

From the Wikipedia: "TrackBack is a system implemented by Movable Type that allows a blogger to see who has seen the original post and has written another entry concerning it. The system works by sending a 'ping' between the blogs, and therefore providing the alert.
TrackBack typically appears below a blog entry and shows a summary of what has been written on the target blog, together with a URL and the name of the blog.
"

A little Googling and I found the bible page about it. But just to make it simple for you all, here goes:

a) Receive Trackback notifications

Whenever you post a message, you can allow people to send you a ping back. It's very easy in Typepad, just check the "Accept Trackbacks" under any post entry. You can even automate this:

In Typepad's back office, just go to your blog's main page, click 'Configure', and the last option 'Display'. There you will find 2 options to automatically check the 'accept trackbacks' box, and another to receive an email for every trackback ping.

Typepad0

b) Send Trackback notifications

Now here comes the difficult part. How do you send a ping ? I had always thought you had to paste the Trackback URL of a post, but it never works. Actually, you need to enable a special field in the back office, onto which you cut&paste the trackback URL. In the post, you keep using the full permalink URL.

Here's how you do it:

Typepad1Typepad1bisTypepad2

- Click on the 'customize the display of this page' at the bottom of the post entry form
- Check the 'show trackback URLs to ping"
- add the Trackback URLs in the proper form.

If you have several blogs, you then need to do this operation on each of them.

Really great fast action short-movies from BMW with Clive Owen

BmwfilmsAlthough they haven't shot any new movie in a very long while (and what a shame! anyone knows about a sequel ?), it is still very much worth watching these 2 seasons of short movies featuring BMW cars and "the hire", played by Clive Owen.

Download the movies (about 50-100Mb each) to your computer for best enjoyment. A real interesting marketing approach to product placement. I wish other companies picked up the idea. It's like watching a commercial series shot like 24! (you can rent the first 2 seasons of 24 on DVD at glowria.fr for a packed week-end of excitement).

CliveowenBy the way, now that Pierce Brosnan is not to continue shooting James Bond movies, I really think Clive Owen would make a fantastic candidate. All these short movies support this claim :)

Steve Jobs is back and is setting up an apparel fashion business

IpodsocksHey... sorry for the confusing title ;)
Just in case you haven't yet seen it, Jobs is back from his cancer removal surgery, looks slightly slimer and a bit more tired in this streaming conference, but is as witty and as great as ever.

And yes, his design team is introducing socks - in 6 colors - to protect your iPod. Very trendy ;)
Actually, the number of accessories for the iPod is quite amazing! Add that revenue stream to their business model!

He also introduced the new iPod Photo!
Cool, looks more and more like a PDA: better calendar, games, and color screen (exactly predicted here)...

IpodphonesHis pro-photo arguments (and against-video)?
- everyone is taking pictures with camera-phones
- no copyright issues with photos
=> he says photos are the next big thing. Cool. Probably right for the next 6 months.
(by the way, check Reiter's blog for the most up to date source on camera phones!)

He's probably right, except that most camera phones are now able to shoot small videos. The length of those will only take a while. Russ argues against Steve and he's probably right.

Marc adds a very good point: 'please tell me why you'd want to carry around photos that you didn't take with your iPod in your iPod?
Where's the camera?
"

All readers of this blog will note that this iPod - AGAIN! - is still missing wireless connectivity. Don't worry it will come !!! WHo still wants to add cable connectivity to all these cool devices ? Make it both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi!
That cable that connects the iPod photo to the TV is neat. But why a cable again ??? Hello ? you even have a wireless Airport Express product. Extend the concept please!

I'll also add to that that there is no service to print the pictures online ! Photoways, Snapfish, oFoto are you listening ? Are you going to give this man a call ?

IpodbonoReally really nice Vertigo clip by U2 on the Silhouette ad campaign. Totally complements the fantastic marketing creativity campaigns from Apple, from the 1984 original introduction of the Mac, to the Think different campaign, and the recent Switch campaign.

Interesting also how he sends the favor back to U2: U2 helped launch the iPod, now Jobs is helping launch the upcoming 16th album by U2. A blurring of frontiers between marketing partners.

And as Steve champions the digital revolution, he also - so truly - states: "broadband is required"...

Why large corporations outsource their R&D to start-ups

Bigsqueeze
Someone very smart once commented (anyone remembers who I'm refering to ?) that the big Internet Bubble in reality was not a big bubble... It liberated an incredible amount of energy from people from all walks of life, and blended them together: techies, marketeers, corporate sharks, financiers, dreamers, graphical artists... Something the blogging phenomenon is doing again, by the way!

Hence, that same person went on to compare some key data (I wish someone still had that around) between R&D expenditure and amounts spend on M&A with smaller start-ups.
Take Cisco for example: some would argue that Cisco had a fantastic R&D department and that this helped it become the networking behemoth we all know, and once #1 market cap in the world. Others (including myself) would argue that Cisco outsourced it's R&D to the aggressive and competitive marketplace, and snatched up any project that looked promising enough.

Indeed, innovation is probably the soul of start-ups: differentiate with more services, features, execution. Differentiate with lower costs, leaner operations, more creative solutions. Not all will succeed of course. But some will. Greed (hum... financial benefit should I say?) is another.

It then makes sometimes a lot of sense for some companies not to build enormous R&D departments (did the respective companies really benefit competitive advantage from the PARC or the Bell Labs ?) and buy up something.
It's maybe cheaper: technology works, market is proven, team is built, execution is there. Of course some improvements are required, and that's one of the reasons that corporate consultants (also called venture capitalists ;) come in handy.
Google has a different approach. So does 3M: everything in-house.

It really comes down to how you define your company and your sustainable competitive advantage.

So when Marc cries wolf, I only half agree with him:

"The trend over and over again - is to let the startup innovate and then the big boys come in, copy them and try to take over." "And I hope all you entrepreneurs are learning a lesson. NO MATTER WHAT - the big guys will steal your idea. NO MATTER WHAT! Bake that into your DNA. Write it on your forhead. Macromedia did it to Laszlo. Apple does it over and over again - it's too numerous to even account for. Microsoft has been the KING of this tactic. And now it's come to the DVD rental world. Why not? The only thing worse than this - is standing still - expecting that some patent or installed base of customers will protect. Stay lean and mean - and keep moving forweard. The one thing we have that they don't have - is new ideas."

Well it all depends on which side you are in, or what you're after:
1) create a venture with the hope of a trade-sale ? (hey AMAZON, wanna buy us?)
2) create a venture with the hope of an IPO (Reed Hastings from Netflix probably can retire by now...)
3) create a venture as a going-concern and keep running it forever... well, we're not all in the game of creating a GE or Nokia... There as so many opportunities of cashing out before...

Summary:
- start-ups are like out-sourced R&D to me. They provide big financial return opportunities for entrepreneurs (along with other thrills such as a roller-coaster learning experience, etc.), and maybe cost-savings for large corporations that buy them.
- are start-ups sustainable in the long run against Goliaths ? sometimes. They require however a unique combination of perfect leasership, perfect timing, unique technology and a couple of other magical ingredients.

Counter-arguments ?

The amazing impact of bloggers in the corporate world

26citiEnough has been said around the blogosphere about those employees fired for blogging about their company or showing off some company affiliation. However, what is really most amazing is when a fun and very outspoken out-of-a-job geek from San Francisco (no offense Russ, just stressin' the irony of all this) reacts on his blog to some over-stated market estimation from a top-notch CEO ?

The company incriminated is of course Macromedia, now full speed behind a mobile version of Flash. Marc Canter, Macromedia's founder (he left 10 years ago), of course immediately picked up the story.

So what happens ? The CEO himself shows up on his blog, and leaves a comment to apologize for that overstatement.

Is this finally the 'we the media' paradigm shift coming out ? The ability for every man to make his voice heard ?

Loic, this is another example to update your examples about blogging power, and use it along with Christophe's in Puteaux or the Netflix addicts...

ps: the pix shows the japanese execs at Citigroup apologizing for... corporate practices I suppose. (c) NYTimes.

The rabbit in the hat: why Osama bin Laden will influence the US election

TopbinladenjazeeraAstonishing!

and many expected it. Probably not in this way.
Osama is back, goes on live TV in the US and says 'dudes! I'm still threatening you, with impunity ?'

2 hypothesis to this very very important incident:

1) Bush has kept Osama hidden somewhere, and pulled the rabbit out of the hat at the 23rd hour, to show that the USA still needs him to fight this "war on terror" (self imposed terror I would argue, in the light of the terror the USA has imposed in Iraq). Shame on him if he is trying to pull tricks like these. José Maria Aznar, the spanish Premier tried the same a couple of days before election, the plot blew in his face, and he was ousted from power. I hope this happens de Bush anyways.

2) Osama was quietly waiting to disrupt the elections. But by now don't all Americans believe that it was Saddam that bombed the twin towers (check all material on Mike Moore's site), so Osama is irrelevant ?

But as Russ posted (and I'll quote his entire post below), this shows fully the incompetence of the Bush administration after 3 years, in dealing with 9/11! He can't be re-elected with all this evidence of incompetence and disdain of the rest of the world.

Mind you: I do not support the "America über Alles" approach to justice:

- if Osama is guilty: show us the proof (no more it's confidential stuff, etc. The Iraqi WMDs were a joke, and treated like a imminent danger)
- if Osama is quilty: apply international treaties to ask for extradition. That's why they exist, and enforced by countries. I fully condemn the US invading a country to pull the guy out, even if the Western World dislikes the regime in place (eg: Talibans in Afghanistan). We don't like the US administration: have we invaded the US ? The US doesn't like Fidel: have they invaded Cuba? They don't like North Korea: have they invaded them ? (well W. is trying somehow...)
- if Osama is guilty: then let him be judged by the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Even Milosevic is under trial there. Oups... the USA is one of the only countries in the world that doesn't recognize the ICJ...
- and finally, if Osama is guilty, gets a trial, and found guilty, and send to jail for life (for the record: I totally & fully oppose death penalty. Check Amnesty International's site for some arguments against death penalty), will it make the world a better place ? Have the issues behind terrorism (poverty, north-south divide, political and religious radicalization, etc.) been solved ? Will the world be safer ?

Catching Osama before the election on November 2nd won't solve the last question above, and that is what we're after. Kerry makes a better candidate. Remember: W. Stands for Wrong.

and here is Russ' post:

"Personally, when I saw this video I was completely amazed. Osama is still around? It's hard to believe, but not only is he alive and well, but still threatening the U.S. Incredible! Regardless of my political feelings, I had the sense that Osama was in some cave somewhere barely alive, or permanently crippled or something. He seemed fine to me on television.

So here's the October surprise which will be spun incredibly by both parties. But honestly, this is incontestable proof that George Bush is a shamefully inept leader and a person who cannot protect America. Bin Laden should not be on TV threatening us, he should be dead. The reason he's not? Because George Bush is incompetent, incapable and weak.

Listening to Republican Television right now, and you'd think that this is some sort of rallying cry around Bush. Of course they're going to say that, but it's 100% Bush's fault that Osama is still alive to threaten us. Bush has done nothing but lead this country into ruin. We have record debt, the highest gas prices in history, unemployment, we're involved in a rapidly deteriorating war in Iraq, and the fight against Al Qaeda that should have been the main focus of this admininstration has been forgotten to the point that Bin Laden can appear on national TV and tell us in so many words to fuck ourselves.

George Bush has made our country weak and risks every American's life with his inability to lead. Please, please do not vote for him on November 2nd. "

Mobile messaging firm IXI Mobile snags $25M

Ixi_main_logo
The Mobile Instant Messaging market is really heating up!!!

From FierceWireless tonight:

"Mobile messaging software maker IXI Mobile secured $25 million in fourth round funding. The round was led by Gemini Israel Venture Funds, Texas Instruments, and Western Technology Investment. IXI Mobile makes mobile messaging software that allows carriers and device makers to introduce new types of messaging apps. The company's main product, the Personal Mobile Gateway (PMG), powers the new Ogo mobile device offered by AT&T Wireless."

Cool...
Remember I said MIM was my favourite application on the phone ? Some guys are after the SMS/MMS markets of the world...
