How a challenger start-up reacts when the incumbent finally wakes up

davidgolNetflix's founder & CEO, Reed Hastings, is interviewed in BusinessWeek this week. A number of things have happened to him, including a huge drop in his share price, a class action law suit for weird churn calculation practices, missed earnings, having their business-model copied over and over, marketing costs going north, etc.
But, as reported here, Blockbuster, the company Red decided to overtake when he started Netflix, is finally deciding to enter the online DVD rental market.

In this article, Reed Hastings , reflects on how a challenger should react when the incumbant finally wakes up. Interesting thoughts for entrepreneurs out there.
"Netflix is worth the extra $2 because the service has consistent overnight service to 90% of our subscribers, we have great recommendations, we've got a well-developed and mature site, and the service works extremely well. "
" What we're spending it on is more and better content. And Blockbuster is going to find the economics very challenging, because we have the economies of scale. We ship nearly a million movies a day, and Blockbuster is going to start from a very small base.
"

He also recognizes that his business is about electronic content distribution and reflects on consumer wireless electronics.
"We look at it as a great way for us to have electronic delivery, in addition to DVD delivery. Let consumers choose what they want, mix and match, on a single subscription. We're very much looking forward to that era. Hopefully by 2007 we'll be a major player in that era. "
There's a wide range now of companies bringing the Internet to the TV. There are Wi-Fi DVD players emerging. Most consumer electronics over the next several years will have integrated Wi-Fi. That's really what we see as bringing the Internet to the television.
"

$37,5m more VC money for the wireless content & applications space!!!

This is getting heavy! Not a single day almost without new announcements. Are you folks following this sector by any chance? These are all 3rd and 4th rounds, hence maturing stages, ready for mass mass consumer deployment.

sorrentlogoFrom TheDeal.com:
"Games developer Sorrent Inc. raised $20 million in third round funding led by Foster City, Calif.-based BA Ventures and including New Enterprise Associates, Globespan Capital Partners and Sienna Ventures.

Foster City-based Sorrent hopes to take a leading position in the development of entertainment applications for wireless devices. Its total funding now stands at $28.5 million following a $5.5 million round led by Palo Alto, Calif.-based Globespan in April 2003 and an initial round in March 2002 led by Menlo park, Calif.-based NEA and including Sienna of San Francisco.

The new investment comes at an undisclosed valuation, but Sorrent CEO Greg Ballard said the company closed the round without launching a marketing effort, selecting BA Ventures from multiple term sheets. "

surfkitchen_logoFrom the DowJones VentureWire Professional:
"Reading, U.K. -- Mobile software firm SurfKitchen said it has raised $17.5 million in a third round of funding, which will underwrite customer wins and product development.
Accel Partners and Scottish Equity Partners co-led the round, contributing the largest share of the funding with a $4.5 million investment. Argo Global Capital also contributed a substantial amount of capital, according to a director with Scottish Equity's IT group.
All three are new investors and were joined by Add Partners, an existing backer."
"The director said he didn't know exactly how much SurfKitchen had raised previously, but said it is at least $10 million
"

Congrats to Gavin and Declan from Surfkitchen! This will definitively help the plans we have discussed together in the past ;)

How blogs can help customer service

hp-woman-2A while ago Bruno Couly complained on his blog that he could not get in touch with someone from Eutelsat and that their customer service sucked! Luckily an Eutelsat business developper read the post, and contacted him. Happy end.

I have been complaining for a while that although Skype (>17,5m downloads and counting) has a great product, they never announced new features and releases to their loyal fans. I am sure that the following is not because of me, but at last, I received today their first customer email!!!! (Their email is accessible here as a web page as well.)
Keep up the good work and set up an RSS feed on your site folks ! As a comparison, tech news site The Register has RSS-ized its site beautifully!
So has the New York Times.

Please notice Skype now also advertises:
- 8m users (out of 17,5m downloads)
- 2 Gb of direct file transfer capacity... Why would ayone need to do that ? 2 Gb? only for .iso... and .divx... right ? the Kazaa spirit is back with the Skype boys).
- a number of new features to help viral marketing, such as greeting cards, wallpapers, gifts, etc. at http://www.skype.com/share

Good work guys. Are you also organizing trips to Estonia ?

SMS printing bike

smsbikeRight, this is what I need to do. I already knew I had to turn my new bike into a mobile hotspot.
That I had to make my coffee machine SMS aware. I knew that I could signal text messages in the crowd!

EnGadget tells me that I can now print SMS on the road by adjusting slightly the gear on my bike...
"Popular Science’s latest How 2.0 section features a guy from Parson’s School of Design who created an SMS-printing bike for his thesis project. The bike sprays foot-high chalk letters of any incoming text message and then creates a photoblog and GPS trail to document the ride. He’s also got some political motivation behind him (his website is Bikes Against Bush, which sounds vaguely political to us) and plans to take an official protest ride at next month’s Republican National Convention in New York."

Can I tag my name with a laser on the moon now, please ?

More WI-Fi devices coming up in your living room

atherosI have been discussing home Wi-Fi devices for a while. I actually went to Surcouf, a French local computer hardware shop in Paris last saturday, just before I bought my new bike. I was trying to find a wireless repeater for my home setup, but it seems there is no such product on the consumer market. Way too expensive to change everything at home anyways so I didn't upgrade.

Maybe I should however, because the signal doesn't reach my existing TV set. Do I care now ? no. I might in the future, if I refer to this post on EnGadget!
"California wireless firm Atheros, has teamed up with NEC to develop a new low cost chipset that can beam high-definition video streams around your house over WiFi. Not exactly something that’s in high demand right now, but in a few years when you want to watch all those HDTV shows recorded on your 1TB TiVo that’s in a different part of those house from your fancy new OLED flat-panel TV, you’ll be glad somebody took the time to figure this one out."

In the meantime, I was surprised to see how many Wi-Fi home devices by Philips, such as the Mx6000i were displayed in the Surcouf show room.

This is not futurology anymore.

and $22M more VC money for the wireless industry :o)

airborneAnd there we go, it seems no day goes by without a new round of financing announced (3 days in a row now...:o) in the wireless / mobility space. Today we look at the content world (the same in which Jamba and Kiwee operate in, recently acquired by US companies in the last 2 months).

From the DowJones VentureWire:
"Airborne Entertainment Raises $22M Series B, Plans Many-Pronged Expansion
7/28/2004
Montreal -- Airborne Entertainment Inc., which funnels brand-name content into cellphone games, wallpapers and other mobile formats for its clientele, has raised $22 million in its Series B round of funding.

It said it is near profitability and plans even more marketing and staffing expansions.

The round folds in C$3 million of bridge financing from Wellington Financial LP Fund II, which was announced by Montreal-based Airborne in April. The whole of the Series B closed Monday.

Insight Venture Partners, a new backer, led the round. A "group of the existing investors" in the company also participated, as did other new investors, said Garner Bornstein, chief executive of the company. The identities of those firms aren't being disclosed.

Previous investors include private equity firm Telesystem Ltd., BCE Capital, the Charles Bronfman family and other individuals.

The up-round brings the company's total financing to $27 million, Bornstein said. Airborne's valuation isn't being disclosed."

Interesting biography and genealogy of John F. Kerry

kerryInteresting bio of John Kerry tonight in today's French evening paper, Le Monde. It discusses mainly his family background and some of his stances regarding the military. You can find a more complete genealogical tree of John Kerry here (xx due to membership requirements on the site), including the exact connection to his cousin Brice Lalonde, French green party leader (an account by him on his cousin here).

And to make Russ happy:

More VC money pouring into wireless, WiMax this time

readlinelogoAs if yesterday's $47m dollars invested in 2 wireless start-ups were not enough, Redline communications raised today $18m in a series C round. These folks are moving aggressively into the WiMax space.
Remember that WiMax start-up Navini raised $30m in a series D round 2 weeks ago... something is definitively happening in this space!

Who said we should wait until 2006 for more about WiMax ?

Excerpts of the article from the DowJones VentureWire:
"WiMax Hardware Designer Redline Raises $18M In 4th Round
7/27/2004
Markham, Ontario -- Redline Communications Inc., a designer of broadband wireless equipment pushing into markets for WiMax, an incipient wireless technology, said it has raised $18 million in a later-stage funding round."
"Matrix Partners and U.S. Venture Partners co-led the funding, which Redline said was its fourth major round, equivalent to a Series C. Matrix and USVP were new investors. Previous investors Positron Public Safety and Telemedia Corp. didn't participate."
"Total funding at Redline, based in Markham, Ontario, is now C$34 million.
"
